Journalism
Steve
was a prolific and erudite writer. He enjoyed words
and language and had a very natural writing style.
He
wrote a number of articles for the County magazine Wiltshire
Life including the following Reviews and Opinion articles:
“A
Close Call for Sculpture in Salisbury” –
a review of the Shape of the Century Exhibition for
the 1999 Salisbury Festival.
“Well,
it’s certainly not what I expected” –
a review of the 2001 Salisbury Festival.
“A
Colourful Marriage that ended in Tears” –
a review of the Salisbury Festival, based on interviews
with Helen Marriage and Trevor Davies, Festival Directors
past and future.
“Should
Foxhunting be Banned? A Special Debate” - Steve
demolished what he believed were weak pro-hunt arguments,
succinctly and dispassionately.
“The
Artist who Preys on Candour” – a review
of wildlife artist Richard Tambling, both the artist
and his art. PDFs of this article are available here:

He
also did two beautiful photographic essays on the seasons
– “A Winter’s Tale in Wiltshire”
and “Mellow Memories of Autumn” and 30 monthly
walks around Wiltshire, illustrated with his own wonderful
photos.
He
was a regular contributor to the national photography
magazine Outdoor Photography, with his own “Day
by Day” column and numerous technical and Viewpoint
articles.
He
had dabbled previously but was just becoming seriously
interested in digital photography when he was diagnosed
with cancer in 2001. He managed to submit his first
article on Salisbury Cathedral, “The Spirit of
Christmas”, to Digital Camera for their December
2002 issue.
